Sara Happ Sweet Clay Lip Mask looks like pale pink frosting in the pot, with a very dense consistency. If you—like us—are obsessed with the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, you’re not alone. Originally launched in 2009 , adored by makeup artists, celebrities, and beauty editors alike, it easily earned cult classic status for marrying a perfectly creamy consistency with a perfectly pearly, glow-enhancing hue. Living Luminizer is the product responsible for all those dew J. Crew complexions. 

Magic Luminizer,  like its predecessor has a mega-hydrating formula and is loaded with organic coconut oil and melts seamlessly into skin. It’s the shade—a warm champagne with a hint of peach—that’s different. Packaging and marketing materials can be quite persuasive. So we go straight to the ingredients list to get the true picture of the product. How much of those  “wonder” ingredients promoted on the front are actually contained in the product?

Ever wonder why some of the names on the ingredients list are unrecognizable? Why is orange peel oil listed as Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil? Ingredients lists must conform to the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) standards of identification. INCI is a system of names for waxes, oils, pigments, chemicals, and other ingredients in skincare and cosmetics that is based on scientific nomenclature (so, yes, that means much of the list will literally be in Latin!).

The order of the list matters. A lot.
The FDA directs that ingredients be listed in order of concentration by weight. So the first listed ingredient is the most concentrated ingredient in the product. 

If water (or aloe vera juice) is the first ingredient on the label, it is likely that 75-95% of the product is comprised of water. Emulsifiers (ingredients that hold the oil and water in mixture) are necessary if oil and water are combined in the product (like in lotions, foundations, cream, illuminators and moisturizers). And preservatives are always necessary if water is present to keep the product from spoiling. Factoring in the percentage for those two necessary ingredients, the remaining available space for active ingredients is between 22 and 2%! This doesn’t mean the product won’t or doesn’t work—peptides, enzymes, vitamins, antioxidants and a host of other active ingredients are typically effective in small percentages.

Always ook for fragrances that are naturally derived or essential oil blends. At One Love Organics, they only use ECOCERT certified blends of 100% natural origin that are made from essential oils, fruit and plant extracts.  Natural fragrances are free of phthalates, parabens, sulfates, chemical sunscreens, petrochemicals, formaldehyde donors, peg’s, dea/tea and 1,4 dioxanes.

"Un-Cover Up" It's a concealer AND foundation that you can use all over your face as a sheer, lightweight foundation AND build up in certain areas, such as under the eyes and around the nose, where you want more coverage. It isn't going to erase all imperfections (like so many foundations that completely white out every flaw and leave you cakey and dry). It's going to give you a more even, healthy skin look, but the effect is still very natural. 

You can't see it sitting on top of your skin, and there is no scent, you pretty much forget you're wearing it. We consider it skincare, actually! 

• 00: Lightest shade for the true snow whites.
• 11: Pale shade with a subtle yellow base.
• 22: The biggest seller. With its yellow base, this shade is great light-medium skin tones.
• 33: A slightly warm tan colour.
• 44: A darker tan colour, which can also be used for creating a tanned effect or for contouring if desired.
• 55: Warm golden tan.

 RMS Beauty "Un-cover Up" contains so few ingredients, and all of them are good for your skin. (Hence why I say it's skincare, not makeup.) There are no fillers, water, silicones or hard-to-pronounce chemicals you've never heard of.

Set with powder. This is really important! Once you've achieved the coverage level you desire, you most likely are going to want powder. "Un" Cover-Up is so hydrating, it WILL leave your skin looking quite dewy. 

RMS  "Un Powder" will take away the dewiness, absorb oil production, and help the "Un" Cover-Up" to last a lot longer throughout the day. However, your application should have a light touch

As an RMS beauty fan, you are probably already aware of the industry's of beauty products and the toxic ingredients that may be lurking in seemingly harmless bottles. With so many cosmetics and personal hygiene brands eager to get on the "green wagon", it's important to know the difference between marketing and actual safety.

There are a few popular buzz words that you may see emblazoned on your beauty products that are meant to signify that they are safer, greener, or healthier. However, you may be surprised by how little these words have to do with the actual ingredients contained in the pretty packaging.  Most importantly read, read, read the list of ingredients!

What do the terms 'natural,' 'organic,' 'non-toxic' and 'hypoallergenic' really mean on beauty product labels? Which is most important to look for? 

Natural: Legally, this means nothing—it's a completely unregulated term and should be thought of as pure marketing it will generally mean that at least some natural ingredients have been used in the formula, but a product can be labeled as natural and contain up to 30 percent synthetic ingredients. Look at the label and if the product is full of ingredients born in a lab (ethyl acetate, nitrocellulose, red #11, etc.) and the only from-the-earth one you recognize is buried at the bottom, that means it's hardly natural. If all the ingredients listed are just the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) Latin names for things you recognize—for example: sodium cocoate is saponified coconut oil—the product is all-natural.

Organic: The use of the word organic is actually highly regulated, and legally means a brand or ingredient has been certified by the USDA. You should see an accompanying logo that confirms this; if you don't, it means nothing and they are about to get in trouble. If you do see the logo, it means that said ingredient (or almost 100% of the ingredients in an organic product) have been grown and processed under a very strict code of cleanliness, with no pesticides or fertilizers, and absolutely no genetically modified organisms.

Non-Toxic: This is a newer designation, also mostly marketing. When companies claim to be non-toxic, they are specifically referring to leaving out ingredients that have been linked to toxic responses in humans: neuro-disruption, hormone disruption, cancer, even death. A great, or I should say horrible, example is phthalates [found mostly in household products and shampoo and conditioner, they give products a uniform consistency and make them easier to pour.   Here are some of the other offender ingredients to always avoid: formaldehyde (found in nail polish, hair gel and colour cosmetics); petroleum (found in moisturizers and lip balms); asbestos (labeled as talc or hydrous magnesium silicate); lead acetate (found in hair dye and lipstick); coal tar (found in hair dye and anti-dandruff shampoo).

Hypoallergenic: Products labeled hypoallergenic are making the claim that they cause fewer adverse reactions than their competitors, but any product can be marked with the word, It holds no meaning whatsoever.
